The Zen Lounge at IIT Kharagpur, established with alumni support, offers yoga, meditation, and wellness workshops to foster mindfulness and mental wellness, while providing virtual mentorship to guide students' academic and personal growth.

IIT Kharagpur has launched the Zen Lounge, a yoga and meditation space within the SNIG Girls Hostel, aimed at enhancing mindfulness, well-being, and mental health among students, marking a significant step in promoting holistic education.
The lounge was made possible through the generous contribution of IIT alumna Viji Narayanan, who resided in the same hostel during her undergraduate years (1986-1991).

This initiative is part of the Alumni Mentorship Program under the Women in Leadership project, led by Partha Ghosh and Asoke Deysarkar of the IIT KGP Alumni Foundation USA.
The virtual platform enables alumni to support and mentor students by offering a few hours each week.
“IIT Kharagpur is a place where academic rigor is complemented by the personal growth of its students. The Zen Lounge is a reflection of this philosophy. I hope it will offer all who walk through its doors a peaceful retreat and a chance to nurture both mind and body, balancing the pressures of academic life,” said Viji Narayanan.
The Zen Lounge is equipped with modern facilities, featuring designated areas for yoga, meditation, and reflection.
According to IIT, the design incorporates calming elements, natural light, and a serene atmosphere.
The space will offer guided meditation sessions, yoga workshops, and wellness talks to assist students in managing academic stress.
Prof Rintu Banerjee, Deputy Director of IIT Kharagpur, highlighted the increasing significance of mental health within the academic community.
“We are delighted to introduce the Zen Lounge as a space where students can pause, reflect, and find moments of calm in the midst of their rigorous academic schedule. Ms Narayanan’s thoughtful contribution will go a long way in encouraging the importance of mindfulness and well-being among our students,” said Banerjee.
“The first-of-its-kind initiative among IITs, the Zen Lounge reflects our commitment to fostering mental health and holistic wellness among students. By encouraging the practice of yoga and meditation, we aim to contribute to a healthier and more balanced student community at IIT Kharagpur,” Banerjee added.
The virtual lounge (ZenWellnessLounge.com) provides students with wellness resources through Zoom sessions on yoga, meditation, and various mentorship programs.
Its core mission is clear yet impactful: to equip students with coping skills for a balanced lifestyle while offering guidance from the alumni network on career advice, internships, and adapting to life at IIT.
