Continuing its steady growth for the fourth consecutive year, IIT Kanpur has filed 152 Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), including trademarks, copyrights, and 124 patents. With submissions in the US, China, and Europe, the institute boosts its global visibility.
The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has set a new benchmark by filing 152 Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in 2024.
This achievement marks the highest number of IPRs ever filed by the institute in a single year, continuing its steady growth for the fourth consecutive year, according to an official statement released by the institution.
IIT Kanpur has maintained its outstanding licensing rate to industrial partners, achieving approximately 12.91% in 2024.
To date, the institute has submitted a total of 1,200 IPRs, the statement continued.
Among the 152 IPR filings are six trademark applications, two copyrights, 10 design registrations, and 124 patents.
By submitting seven US patents, two Chinese patents, and one European patent, the institute has further increased its global visibility.
The IPR filings span a wide range of fields, including nanotechnology and medtech. Notable inventions include a chop saw metal-cutting machine, a transdermal patch for drug delivery, and a Kryptoceler for cryptographic acceleration.
Other noteworthy patents include a hybrid-powered electric tower car and a contactless automated tool for measuring crack growth.
In 2024, the institute also saw a significant increase in the number of IPRs granted, with 217 previously filed IPRs granted this year.
Notable granted patents include a smart electric meter, a portable medical suction device, a quadcopter drone with an out-of-plane folding mechanism, a broadband uniform-efficiency orbital angular momentum detector for quantum technologies, and a method for creating an ultra-thin polymer composite electrolyte.
Further demonstrating its commitment to translating research into practical solutions, the institute has also licensed seven inventions and introduced two innovative products: the "Air Sampling Device" and the "Metamaterial Cloaking System."
The Society for Technology Management (STEM) Impact Awards 2024 were also presented to IIT Kanpur in recognition of its significant technology transfer initiatives.
This marks the third time the institute has received the STEM Impact Award.
This year, the award was given for the technology transfer of the ‘Haptic Smart Watch for the Blind & Visually Impaired,’ which has had a considerable socio-economic impact.
