IIM Guwahati gets green light, becomes second in Northeast

Assam is set to welcome its first Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, following the passage of the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in Parliament. This will be the second IIM in the Northeast, after IIM Shillong.

The Bill was introduced earlier this month and received approval from both houses after detailed discussions.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan hailed the development as a “historic milestone” in Assam’s growth as a center for higher education.

Taking to X, Pradhan said, “IIM Guwahati will help address regional disparities in higher education, provide world-class management training, and strengthen research in the field.”

He emphasized that the move reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to expand access to top-tier educational institutions across all regions, especially the Northeast.

The upcoming institute is part of a broader trilateral agreement involving the central government, the Assam government, and the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), aimed at fostering long-term peace and development in the state.

Pradhan congratulated Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the people of Assam, adding that the new IIM fulfills a commitment under the “Purvodaya” initiative to boost eastern India’s progress.

He also said the institute will play a role in developing the “Ashtalakshmi,” referring to the eight northeastern states viewed as essential to India’s overall growth.

Once operational, IIM Guwahati is expected to provide students from Assam and neighboring states access to top-quality management education closer to home.

It is also likely to draw faculty, researchers, and corporate partnerships to the region, opening up local opportunities and strengthening the academic ecosystem.
