IGNOU launches online sand art courses with Padma Shri Sudarsan Pattnaik

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced two online courses dedicated to sand art, in collaboration with internationally acclaimed sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik.

The courses are available through the Ministry of Education’s Swayam platform, with enrollment open until Sept 15.

The two programs, titled "Introduction to Sand Art" and "Principles & Formats of Sand Art," are designed to offer both theoretical understanding and practical skills. They commenced on July 15 and will continue through Nov 15, spanning 12 weeks.

Pattnaik, who has represented India in over 60 international sand art championships and festivals, brings his extensive field experience into the course content.

IGNOU noted that the courses aim to introduce learners to the fundamentals of sand art, including environmental considerations and techniques involved in crafting sand sculptures.

Classified under the ‘Arts’ category, the program is conducted in English, carries four credit points, and is offered at the undergraduate level.

Participants will explore topics such as global sand art practices, site selection, choice of sand and water, and methods for gathering, compacting, and shaping materials.

The course begins with an introduction to sand art’s global history, cultural relevance, and modern adaptations.

It also guides learners on choosing appropriate locations for artwork, taking into account factors like terrain, weather, and accessibility. A section is devoted to understanding how sand grain size and texture influence the final piece.

Selecting the right amount and type of water is another key component, as it directly affects the stability and form of the sculpture.

The syllabus also includes best practices for compacting sand and crafting stable formats. The final stages focus on creating an environment suitable for public display, including lighting, audience flow, and preservation strategies.

To earn a certificate, learners must complete both internal and external evaluations. The internal assessment consists of a 30-mark quiz, while the external component is a 70-mark proctored end-term exam.

A minimum of 40% overall is required to qualify, including at least 12 marks in the quiz and 28 in the final exam.

Interested learners can register and access materials on the official Swayam portal at onlinecourses.swayam2.ac.in.

IGNOU described the course as an opportunity for art enthusiasts to engage with a unique medium and gain hands-on creative experience guided by one of the country’s most celebrated artists.
