Indian Maritime University, a recognized Centre of Excellence Successfully Hosts its 10th Convocation

Indian Maritime University celebrates its 10th Convocation, with 2,198 graduates ready to steer India’s maritime future under Vision 2030 & Amrit Kaal 2047.

At the university’s headquarters in Chennai, the 10th Convocation of the Indian Maritime University, a recognized Centre of Excellence (IMU) was held on Friday, September 26, 2025. The Hon’ble Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and delivered an inspiring address to the young graduates.

A total of 2,198 students from IMU’s four schools, spread across six campuses and affiliated institutions, received their degrees. Among them were four PhD scholars and one MS (Research) graduate.

The event was also attended by Shri T.K. Ramachandran, Secretary (MoPSW), senior officials, special guests, faculty members, and the proud families of the graduating students.

In his address, Hon’ble Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said, “India is sailing into a new era of maritime excellence — with bold reforms, green and digital ports, and renewed advancements in shipbuilding and research. The Indian Maritime University, a recognised Centre of Excellence stands at the heart of this transformation, producing not just graduates but leaders who will shape the nation. Under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, our graduates will be the anchors as India emerges as a leading global maritime power.”

The convocation not only celebrated IMU’s academic achievements but also highlighted the Ministry’s accomplishments in 2024–25. These included:

  • Handling of over 850 million tonnes of cargo,
  • Capacity enhancement at major ports, and
  • Successful implementation of the Sagarmala programme with more than 800 projects worth over ₹5.5 lakh crore.

The event reaffirmed IMU’s role as a centre of excellence in maritime education, research, and innovation. It aligns with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Amrit Kaal Maritime Vision 2047, aimed at positioning India as a top maritime nation by 2047. The convocation concluded with an atmosphere of pride and promise as graduates stepped forward to contribute to India’s growing maritime sector.
