Delhi schools instructed to ban single-use plastics to support environmental sustainability

A circular posted on the Delhi Directorate of Education's (DDE) official website instructs all heads of government and government-aided recognized schools to refrain from using single-use plastics (SUP).

This directive follows a warning from the Department of Environment, highlighting the environmental risks associated with SUP usage.

“The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India has notified the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, on 12/8/2021 under the provisions of Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 and as amended to date, has mandated banning of 19 identified Single Use Plastic (SUP) items. Use of the following SUP items should be discouraged and eliminated for use in day-to-day life and instead, eco-friendly alternatives may be adopted,” reads the circular.

Due to their non-biodegradable nature, SUPs have a harmful ecological impact, as outlined in the circular.

Many items classified as SUPs, such as straws, cups, packaging films, and carry bags, are lightweight and easily carried by wind or mixed with other solid waste, according to the guidelines.

This can lead to blockages in sewer and drainage systems, exacerbating waterlogging.

This initiative reflects the efforts of educational institutions to foster a sustainable framework that actively combats climate change.

Additionally, the circular includes advice from the Department of Environment, urging authorities to support the discontinuation of SUPs in their departments and organizations.
