Prayagraj Tightens Security Ahead of Magh Mela and Basant Panchami

Authorities in Prayagraj have significantly tightened security arrangements ahead of Basant Panchami and other important bathing dates of the Magh Mela, as the city prepares to handle a massive influx of pilgrims at the Triveni Sangam. The measures aim to ensure safety, smooth movement and effective crowd management during one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the country.

To manage large crowds, the administration has deployed AI-enabled surveillance cameras across key locations, including entry points, bathing ghats, parking zones and major intersections. These cameras are integrated with real-time monitoring systems to detect overcrowding, unusual movement patterns and potential safety risks. Drone surveillance is also being used to monitor crowd density and traffic flow from aerial vantage points, allowing quick response by security personnel.

In addition, a comprehensive traffic management and diversion plan has been implemented in coordination with neighbouring districts. Dedicated routes have been earmarked for pilgrims, emergency services and essential supplies, while restrictions have been placed on heavy vehicles during peak bathing days. Temporary parking facilities and shuttle services have been arranged to reduce congestion near the Sangam area.

The administration has also strengthened on-ground security deployment, with increased presence of police, paramilitary forces, disaster response teams and volunteers. Control rooms equipped with modern communication systems are functioning round the clock to coordinate between agencies and respond promptly to emergencies.

Special emphasis has been placed on crowd safety, sanitation and public health, with medical camps, ambulances and fire services positioned at strategic locations. Public announcements and digital displays are being used to guide pilgrims and discourage overcrowding at sensitive points.

Officials have stated that the technology-driven approach reflects lessons learned from past mass gatherings and aligns with best practices for managing large religious events. The enhanced security arrangements aim to ensure that devotees can observe the Magh Mela and Basant Panchami rituals safely and peacefully, while minimising risks associated with large-scale congregations.
