Concerning the Repairability Index:

What does the Repairability Index (RI) refer to?

The Repairability Index is a uniform, self-reported metric given by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to show how readily a product, such as a smartphone or tablet, can be taken apart, fixed, and serviced.

Aspects of the RI Framework:

Declared by OEMs themselves: No extra compliance responsibility; reliant on standardized scoring metrics.

Addresses 11 critical elements susceptible to malfunction (battery, screen, camera, charging port, etc.).

Assessed based on 6 fundamental criteria:

Rating System: Five-point numerical scale.

Required Display: At physical/e-commerce sales locations and through QR code on the packaging.

Importance of the RI:

Enables Consumers: Supports knowledgeable decisions and encourages openness.

Advocates for Sustainability: Supports thoughtful use instead of excessive consumption.

Backs Right to Repair: Enhances India's Right to Repair Portal introduced in 2022.

Enhances Circular Economy: Aids in prolonging product lifespan and minimizing e-waste.
