Maharashtra government formally approved the merger of Indian Railways and Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL)

Concerning Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL):

What Is It?

KRCL is a dedicated entity established by the Ministry of Railways in 1990, separate from Indian Railways.

Coverage: The route spans 741 km across Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and coastal Kerala, linking Roha to Mangaluru.

Strategic Significance:

Constructed through the Western Ghats, it tackled challenging landscapes with engineering creativity, highlighting Indian technical skill.

Serves as a crucial link for travelers and cargo, greatly shortening travel duration and facilitating economic unity in the Konkan area.

Reasons for Splitting from Indian Railways?

KRCL was organized in the form of a joint venture model:

GOI (51%), Maharashtra (22%), Karnataka (15%), and both Goa and Kerala (6% each).

Its division enabled autonomous decision-making and quicker project implementation in challenging terrains.

Extra details:

The Indian Railways consists of 70 divisions that fall within its 17 zones.

The latest inclusion is the Jammu Railway division.

Including Metro Railway, Kolkata brings the total to 19 zones in India.

Every area has a General Manager (GM) overseeing it. Each division is headed by a Divisional Railway Manager (DRM).
