Seven new natural heritage locations from India have been included in UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites, increasing India’s overall count to 69 sites under review

What Is It?
The Tentative List represents the initial phase in achieving World Heritage Site designation through UNESCO.

Inclusion indicates worldwide acknowledgment and initiates the pathway for prospective nomination and international conservation funding/support.
Objective:
Safeguard Geological and Natural Heritage: Emphasize locations with distinctive ecological, geological, and scientific importance.
Enhance Worldwide Awareness: Boost India's cultural diplomacy and soft power by highlighting its natural marvels.
Nominated Locations & Main Characteristics
Deccan Traps, Maharashtra – Home to some of the planet's finest preserved lava flows, situated in Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary (a UNESCO World Heritage site as well).
St. Mary’s Island Group, Karnataka – Uncommon columnar basalt formations from the Late Cretaceous era (85 million years ago).
Caves of the Meghalayan Age, Meghalaya – Comprises Mawmluh Cave, recognized as the global stratotype for the Meghalayan Age within the Holocene Epoch.
Naga Hill Ophiolite, Nagaland – Reveals oceanic crust raised on land, essential for comprehending plate tectonics.
Erra Matti Dibbalu, Andhra Pradesh – Red sandy hills featuring paleo-climatic indicators, highlighting coastal landforms.
Natural Heritage of Tirumala Hills, Andhra Pradesh – Site of the Eparchaean Unconformity (1.5 billion years old) and the Silathoranam arch.
Varkala Cliffs, Kerala – Stunning sea cliffs revealing Warkalli Formation, featuring natural springs and beautiful scenery.

Enhances Research & Education: Offers chances for geological, ecological, and climate research.
