: People’s Liberation Army conducts large-scale live-fire exercises, signalling Beijing’s hardening posture

As part of “Justice Mission 2025”, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) conducted extensive military exercises around Taiwan, involving joint live-fire drills, air and naval manoeuvres, and simulated maritime blockades across multiple zones of the Taiwan Strait. Several exercise areas reportedly encroached upon waters claimed by Taiwan, sharply escalating cross-strait tensions.

The drills were conducted by multiple PLA commands, including the Eastern Theatre Command, and demonstrated integrated operations among the navy, air force, rocket force and cyber-electronic warfare units. Analysts view the exercises as a rehearsal for blockade and coercive scenarios, rather than a full-scale invasion, signalling China’s growing emphasis on “grey-zone” tactics.

The timing of the drills is significant. They followed renewed US arms sales to Taiwan, high-level political interactions involving Taiwanese leadership, and rising strategic competition between China and the United States in the Indo-Pacific. Beijing has consistently maintained that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China under the “One China” principle, while Taiwan asserts de facto autonomy with democratic governance.

Why it matters:

The Taiwan Strait is one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints. Escalation risks disrupting global trade and supply chains, especially semiconductor production, given Taiwan’s central role in the global chip industry. Any prolonged instability could impact shipping routes, insurance costs and investor confidence across East Asia.

For the Indo-Pacific region, the drills reinforce concerns about China’s assertive military posture and raise the likelihood of miscalculation involving regional and extra-regional powers such as the US, Japan and Australia. They also strengthen arguments for enhanced maritime preparedness and strategic coordination among like-minded countries.

Conclusion:

China’s Justice Mission 2025 drills reflect a hardening stance on Taiwan and a willingness to use military signalling to assert strategic claims. Managing escalation through diplomacy, confidence-building measures and regional dialogue will be concluded.
