What is it?

A scientifically managed, globally recognized area that guarantees horses are free from certain equine diseases, enabling them to engage in international trade and competitions.

Founded at: Remount Veterinary Corps (RVC) Centre & College, Meerut Cantonment, Uttar Pradesh

Acknowledged by: World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

Founded by: Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying

Essential Attributes of the EDFC

Disease-Free Certification: Formally recognized as free from Equine Influenza, Glanders, Surra, Equine Piroplasmosis, and Equine Infectious Anemia. Since 2014, India has also been free from African Horse Sickness.

Strong Biosecurity Measures: Enforces rigorous Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) encompassing hygiene, pest management, animal health monitoring, waste disposal, and sanitation.

Compartmentalisation Standards: Adheres to WOAH’s Terrestrial Animal Health Code, preserving a sub-group of animals with a specific health status.

Round-the-clock Surveillance & Monitoring: Ongoing veterinary assessments allow for prompt identification and management of infections.

Functions:

Enhances Global Trade: Supports the export of premium Indian sport horses adhering to international criteria.

Supports Equestrian Sports: Allows Indian horses and riders to compete in international equestrian competitions.

Enhances Animal Health Frameworks: Showcases India’s dedication to international biosecurity and scientifically validated animal husbandry methods.

Expands to Poultry Industry: India is duplicating this approach for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI)-Free Compartments to facilitate secure export of poultry goods.
