Expanding South-South cooperation through digital public goods and health systems

Preparations for the India–Africa Summit 2025 are in full swing, reflecting India’s strategic commitment to strengthening ties with the African continent. The summit, which brings together African heads of state and Indian leadership, aims to deepen South-South cooperation across multiple sectors, including technology, health, energy, and defence. This aligns with India’s broader foreign policy objective of enhancing Global South leadership and promoting a multipolar world order.
A central focus of the summit is digital public infrastructure. India plans to share its expertise in digital payment systems, e-governance, and interoperable digital platforms, enabling African nations to modernize public service delivery efficiently. This initiative underscores the increasing role of digital public goods in development cooperation, especially in improving financial inclusion and service transparency.

In the health sector, the summit aims to foster pharmaceutical cooperation, vaccine manufacturing, and health-system strengthening. Africa has expressed interest in technology transfer, domestic vaccine production, and pandemic preparedness. India’s experience in cost-effective vaccine production and supply chain management is expected to play a key role in supporting Africa’s public health resilience.
Food security and climate action are additional priority areas. India is expected to offer technical support in agriculture, including climate-resilient farming practices, solar-powered irrigation, and storage solutions, ensuring sustainable food systems. Africa, in turn, seeks collaboration on climate-finance mechanisms to mitigate climate risks and boost renewable energy adoption.
The summit also includes defence and strategic partnerships, focusing on capacity-building, training, and joint exercises. India’s Lines of Credit for infrastructure and solar-energy projects will further strengthen bilateral economic engagement. These efforts reflect a holistic approach to South-South diplomacy, blending economic development, technological cooperation, and strategic alignment.
Analysts note that the India–Africa Summit 2025 will serve as a platform to project India as a reliable partner for the Global South, balancing development cooperation with strategic interests. By combining digital innovation, health security, renewable energy, and defence collaboration, India aims to offer a model of inclusive growth and technological empowerment that resonates with African priorities.
In conclusion, the summit underscores India’s commitment to multipolarity, sustainable development, and resilient partnerships. Strengthened India–Africa ties are expected to have long-term implications for regional stability, economic growth, and South-South solidarity, reinforcing India’s role as a key actor in shaping a cooperative and equitable global order.
