India–Africa Partnership Gains Momentum in 2026

In 2026, India’s engagement with African nations witnessed renewed momentum across economic, technological and strategic domains. Bilateral and regional trade ties expanded through preferential trade arrangements and greater market access for African exports. India also scaled up support for Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)—including platforms inspired by Aadhaar, UPI and DigiLocker—to assist African countries in improving service delivery, financial inclusion and governance. Defence cooperation deepened through joint exercises, training of African military personnel, maritime security cooperation and capacity-building initiatives.

Key areas of cooperation

  • Trade and investment:
Focus on pharmaceuticals, agriculture, automobiles, energy and capacity building, with emphasis on value addition within Africa.
  • Digital Public Infrastructure:
Sharing India’s low-cost, open-source DPI model to strengthen e-governance, fintech and social welfare delivery.
  • Defence and security:
Training programmes, peacekeeping support and maritime cooperation to enhance regional stability.

Way forward

Sustained engagement through private-sector participation, timely project execution, people-to-people ties and alignment with Africa’s development priorities will be key to consolidating the India–Africa partnership.
