India Supports Palestine's Statehood at the UN

India has supported a resolution in the UN General Assembly that backs the 'New York Declaration' on the peaceful resolution of the Palestine conflict and the execution of the two-state solution

The resolution was proposed by France and received strong support, with 142 countries voting in favor, 10 opposing, and 12 abstaining.

Among those who voted against were Argentina, Hungary, Israel, and the United States.

In the statement, the leaders consented to undertake joint efforts to conclude the war in Gaza and to attain a fair, peaceful, and enduring resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The resolution focuses on the successful enactment of the two-state solution, aiming to create a brighter future for Palestinians, Israelis, and all communities in the region.

It urged the Israeli leadership to make a definitive public promise to the two-state solution, which includes a viable and sovereign Palestinian State.

India’s Position on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

In 1974, India became the first non-Arab nation to acknowledge the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

In 1988, India became one of the first nations to acknowledge the State of Palestine.

India regularly supported Palestinian resolutions at the UN.

Backing for Palestinian Nationhood:

India endorses a two-state solution, promoting peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine within secure and acknowledged borders.

Supports East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine (according to UN resolutions).

Firmly backs Palestine's inclusion in global organizations (e.g., UNESCO, UNGA observer state status in 2012).

High-Level Visits: In 2018, Prime Minister Modi made a landmark trip to Palestine, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister.

Before that, in 2015, former President Pranab Mukherjee traveled to Palestine, making it the inaugural visit by an Indian President to Palestine.

Development Aid: Over the years, India has extended several types of developmental cooperation support to Palestine, totaling around US$ 141 million.

The IBSA Fund, which includes India, Brazil, and South Africa, has financed four projects in Palestine totaling US$ 5 million.
