India's Steel Ministry leads the charge in developing a comprehensive green steel policy, focusing on eco-friendly manufacturing, skill enhancement, and financial backing. With innovative approaches like carbon capture and hydrogen utilization, India is poised to revolutionize the steel industry towards sustainability.

India's Green Steel Initiative
The Indian Steel Ministry is spearheading the development of a comprehensive Green Steel Policy, aimed at revolutionizing the steel manufacturing process, enhancing required skill sets, and providing crucial funding support. This initiative aligns with a broader strategy for complete decarbonisation, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly steel industry.
Green steel represents a paradigm shift in steel production, emphasizing methods that significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional processes. This approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also holds the potential to reduce costs and improve the quality of steel products.

The conventional steel manufacturing process, particularly involving blast furnaces, contributes significantly to global carbon emissions due to high coal and coke consumption. With steel demand expected to soar in the 21st century, there is a pressing need to explore low greenhouse gas emission alternatives. In India, the domestic steel sector alone contributes 12% of the country's greenhouse gas emissions, underscoring the urgency for sustainable solutions.
Green steel production encompasses various innovative techniques, including carbon capture and storage (CCS), utilization of green and blue hydrogen, maximization of biomass utilization, and the adoption of artificial iron units (AIUs). These approaches aim to mitigate carbon emissions throughout the steel manufacturing process while ensuring the production of high-grade steel.
Internationally, several initiatives are accelerating the transition towards green steel. The First Movers Coalition, spearheaded by the World Economic Forum, and the Industrial Deep Decarbonisation Initiative (IDDI) are mobilizing governments and industries to adopt low-emission practices. Corporate-led initiatives like Steel Zero and Concrete Zero are committing to net-zero steel and low-emission concrete, setting ambitious targets for reducing carbon footprints.
In India, the Steel Ministry's green steel policy is a cornerstone of the country's sustainable development agenda. Task forces have been established to explore various aspects of green steel production, including the use of biochar or biomass in blast furnaces to reduce carbon emissions. India is also pioneering its own hydrogen-based Direct Reduction of Iron (DRI) technology, with significant investment allocated for pilot projects.
India's transition to green steel production represents a critical step towards achieving carbon neutrality and fostering a more sustainable industrial sector. By embracing innovative technologies and forging strategic partnerships, India can lead the global charge towards environmentally friendly steel production. The allocation of resources and concerted efforts across government, industry, and research sectors will be essential in realizing this vision of a greener future for steel manufacturing.
