IIT Madras Hosts 6th Shaastra Rapid FIDE-Rated Chess Tournament: A Global Confluence of Grandmasters, Enthusiasts, and Emerging Talents Celebrating the Thriving Chess Culture

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is gearing up to host the highly anticipated International Chess Federation (FIDE)-rated Rapid Chess Tournament on March 30th and 31st, 2024. This event marks a significant occasion as IIT Madras stands as the sole IIT in the nation organizing an Open Rapid Rating tournament annually.
With over 35 participants from IIT Madras, the '6th Shaastra Rapid FIDE Rated Chess Tournament' promises an exhilarating showdown, featuring six Grandmasters, sixteen International Masters, three Women Grandmasters, and a Women International Master. Notably, players from various countries, including Australia, England, the USA, and Singapore, are set to grace the event.
Boasting a total prize fund of a ₹ 5,00,000, with the top prize amounting to a ₹ 65,000, the tournament not only offers substantial rewards but also fosters a vibrant chess culture within the institute and beyond.
Professor Sathyanarayana N Gummadi, Dean (Students), IIT Madras, expressed his delight, extending a warm invitation to all participants, speakers, judges, and stakeholders. He emphasized the tournament's potential to unite individuals, encourage collaboration, and inspire innovative strategies while nurturing the spirit of the game.
Professor V. Sriram, Advisor (Co-curricular), IIT Madras, highlighted the significance of hosting FIDE-rated tournaments like the Shaastra Rapid Chess event, providing participants with an opportunity to enhance their skills, elevate their ratings, and gain invaluable experience.
With more than 500 players from diverse backgrounds participating this year, ranging from six-year-old prodigies to seasoned veterans aged 72, the tournament underscores the timeless appeal of chess. The top 15 boards will be broadcast live on various online platforms, ensuring widespread access to the games.
Mr. Nithin S, Student Co-Curricular Affairs Secretary, IIT Madras, and a Fifth Year IDDD Student, emphasized the thrill of organizing such a monumental event amidst India's burgeoning chess scene. He lauded the tournament's magnitude, attracting enthusiasts worldwide and enriching the academic and extracurricular experiences of the student community.
Mr. Veera Phani Sai Teja, Institute Chess Captain and Student Publicity Strategist, echoed the sentiment, expressing excitement at the opportunity to orchestrate a grand tournament. With innovative features such as special DGT boards for top players and live-streamed matches, the event promises an unparalleled experience for chess aficionados at IIT Madras.
