Combat Antimicrobial Resistance
The Global Leaders Group (GLG) on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) has released a comprehensive report titled "Towards specific commitments and action in the response to antimicrobial resistance," ahead of a high-level meeting on AMR at the United Nations General Assembly. This report highlights the pressing need for concerted efforts to address the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance, which poses significant challenges to global public health.
One of the key findings of the GLG report is the urgent requirement for adequate, predictable, and sustainable financing to combat AMR effectively. The report emphasizes the importance of both domestic and external funding sources to address the dwindling research and development pipeline for new antibiotics. Additionally, the GLG proposes expanding the scope of existing financing instruments to include AMR and increasing investments to support the implementation of multisectoral National Action Plans, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

To catalyze action at the national level, the GLG proposes ambitious global targets. These include reducing global deaths caused by bacterial AMR by 10% by 2030 and ensuring that access group antibiotics comprise at least 80% of overall human antibiotic consumption. Furthermore, the GLG emphasizes the need to reduce antimicrobial usage in agri-food systems globally and eliminate the use of medically important antimicrobials for non-veterinary medical purposes.
Established in 2020, the GLG advises on political actions to mitigate drug-resistant infections and is supported by the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat (QJS) on AMR. This collaborative effort aims to provide leadership and advocacy for sustainable solutions to combat AMR. The GLG report underscores the importance of global cooperation and coordinated action to address the multifaceted challenges posed by antimicrobial resistance.
Addressing AMR is crucial for safeguarding public health and ensuring the efficacy of medical treatments worldwide. Without decisive action, AMR could lead to millions of preventable deaths and substantial economic losses. Therefore, it is imperative for governments, international organizations, and stakeholders across various sectors to prioritize and implement measures to combat antimicrobial resistance effectively.
