Commonly present in soil and plants, playing significant roles in citric acid manufacturing, the food sector, fermentation, and farming.

Referred to as "the mainstay of biotechnology" because of their industrial uses.

Recently Discovered Species::

Located in the Western Ghats.

Expands quickly, generates brown spores and orange sclerotia (dormant structures).

Possesses smooth, oval spores, contrasting with numerous others that feature rough, spiky ones.

Additionally from the Western Ghats.

Rapidly developing with plentiful sclerotia and moderate spore output.

Contains spiny spores and branching formations that divide into numerous columns.

Moreover, two species were documented for the first time in India: A. aculeatinus and A. brunneoviolaceus.

Importance:

Indicates that the Western Ghats possess a wealth of concealed fungal diversity.

Beneficial for industry (citric acid, food fermentation), agriculture (soil nutrient assistance), and biotech uses.

Enhances India’s role in research related to taxonomy, ecology, and biotechnology.
