Let's find out more about India's first variable speed pumped storage facility!

What is a Pumped Storage Facility (PSF)?

A pumped storage power plant (PSP) is a kind of hydropower storage facility that moves water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir during times of low demand (off-peak hours) by utilizing excess energy.

During peak demand times, water is discharged from the upper reservoir to produce electricity.

Variable speed PSPs provide adaptable and accurate management of pump-turbine functions, allowing them to react to swift changes in grid demand and the variability of renewable energy sources.

Importance at the National and Sectoral Levels

Grid Stability and Renewable Energy Integration: Variable speed PSP can rapidly adjust output, serving as an essential solution for grid balancing.

Peaking Power Supply: Offers 24/7 energy assistance, particularly during evening peaks when solar output decreases.

Energy Self-Sufficiency and Atmanirbhar Bharat: Showcases the advanced engineering capabilities of Indian PSUs in intricate hydro infrastructure.
