What is it?

Geotagging refers to the method of designating latitude and longitude coordinates to every structure and plotting it on a Geographic Information System (GIS).

It offers an accurate digital identity for each building in India.

Inaugurated in: To be executed as part of Houselisting Operations (HLO), 2026, the initial stage of Census 2027.

Aim:

To guarantee precise tallying of structures and residences.

Enhance workload management for enumerators and eliminate inconsistencies in manual sketch maps.

How does it function?

Enumerators will go to designated Houselisting Blocks (HLBs).

They will utilize smartphones and the Census mobile application with location services activated.

Every structure will be digitally tagged and categorized (residential, commercial, mixed use, iconic).

Information on Census Houses and Households will be documented at the same time.

Main Characteristics:

Digital Layout Mapping (DLM) supplants hand-drawn designs utilized in previous Censuses.

Enumerators will utilize their personal smartphones (in contrast to SECC 2011 where tablets were supplied).

Geotagging will be combined with additional Census datasets (population, socio-economic, cultural).

Importance:

Precision – Minimizes redundancy and neglect of properties.
