Chandigarh becomes first to enforce dress code for teachers in govt schools

The Chandigarh Education Department has introduced a dress code for teachers in the city's government schools, requiring both male and female staff to wear formal attire.

"The uniform specifications state that female employees will wear sarees or salwar kameez, while male employees will dress in formal shirts and trousers," the department said.

The new dress code aims to standardize the appearance of educators, promote professionalism, and cultivate an atmosphere that supports learning, the department explained.

With this initiative, Chandigarh becomes the first state or Union Territory to enforce such a policy in government schools.

"In a significant step to improve the professional environment within educational institutions, the Chandigarh Education Department, following advice from the Administrator of UT Chandigarh, has implemented an elegant uniform for teachers across government schools," the statement noted.

The dress code was initially launched at the PM Shri Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector-14, Dhanas, Chandigarh.

The move has been praised by Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria.

"A unified dress code not only fosters equality among staff but also boosts a sense of pride and professionalism," Kataria said, according to the release.

The department aims to expand the dress code across all schools before the start of classes after the 2025 summer vacation.

"By standardizing attire, teachers will present a more professional image, offering a positive role model for students. A uniform dress code reduces socio-economic disparities among staff, creating a more inclusive atmosphere. It can also enhance team spirit and morale among educators," the statement concluded.
