Andhra Pradesh launches LEAP initiative to revamp education system

In an effort to improve student learning outcomes, Andhra Pradesh is redefining its educational paradigm this month with the introduction of LEAP (Learning Excellence in Andhra Pradesh), according to Education Minister Nara Lokesh.

Significant features of the initiative include a play-based curriculum, pedagogy training, and Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), an AI-driven remedial assessment program.

"Andhra Pradesh is pioneering a new era of education through LEAP—focusing on foundational learning, global best practices, and inclusive growth," Lokesh said.

Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, the model will be implemented.

The minister clarified that the government's goal is to establish a world-class education system by 2029, using an outcome-oriented strategy that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) and other cutting-edge technologies to equip students with technical, leadership, and real-life skills.

He noted that key reports, such as the ASER survey, highlighted poor learning outcomes, which underscored the need for the new model.

As part of the infrastructure upgrade, all pre-primary and primary classrooms will now feature print-rich environments and Building as Learning Aid (BaLA).

Officials also announced that two to three model anganwadi center schools (AWCs) will be established in each assembly constituency.

"The inclusion of girl child toilets and basic facilities like electricity and water connections in AWCs will also be ensured," a senior official said.

The curriculum and pedagogy overhaul will align with NEP 2020 goals, emphasizing 21st-century skills, digital literacy, and holistic learning in both primary and upper-primary levels.

The redesign will also incorporate value-based education and a greater emphasis on extracurricular activities at all levels.

Additionally, bridge courses will be offered to students transitioning to Grades 6 and 9.

Summer learning packages, which will include assignments, assessments, and tailored learning materials, will be provided to help students in Grades 6 to 8 prepare for the upcoming academic year.

The plan also includes the introduction of e-content and prescriptive learning resources based on assessment data.

Furthermore, there are plans for a comprehensive teacher training program, e-content on best pedagogical practices, e-modules for teaching vocational courses, and professional development opportunities for principals, including workshops and mentorship.

The alignment of teacher performance data with student outcomes is also a key component of the initiative.
