Against all odds, Nilgiris tribal becomes first youth to earn postgraduate degree

M Seetha, a 23-year-old from the Kurumba tribe in Katachanakolli village, Nilgiris, has become the first person from her community to earn a postgraduate degree.

Her achievement is all the more remarkable given her origins: deep in tea estates, far from educational infrastructure, and amid economic instability.

Her journey began when a field group from Madras Christian College visited her village. Inspired by their stories, Seetha pursued schooling despite severe challenges: her father’s battle with tuberculosis, her mother’s daily-wage work, and frequent food shortages.

With NGO-run hostel support, she completed her schooling in Devarshola—12 km away—and later a BSW at Government Arts & Science College in Gudalur .

Convincing her parents to send her to Chennai for an MSW at MCC was difficult due to cultural and financial barriers. However, an affirmative action cell at MCC supported her with tuition and accommodation. While studying, Seetha also worked part-time .

Now back in her village, Seetha works with children and community members, urging parents to prioritize education. She hopes her achievement will inspire others, proving that even remote tribal youth can dream and succeed.
