Enhancing interoperability, counter-insurgency capabilities, and regional maritime security

The 14th edition of the India–Maldives joint military exercise, ‘Ekuverin’, commenced recently in Kerala, marking another milestone in bilateral defence cooperation. The exercise primarily focuses on counter-insurgency operations, joint tactical drills, and interoperability between the two nations’ armed forces. It allows both armies to exchange best practices in urban operations, disaster response, and maritime security, while strengthening coordination in planning and executing complex military manoeuvres.
The drill includes practical exercises in small-unit operations, search-and-rescue missions, and coordinated patrols, emphasizing preparedness against unconventional threats. Training modules also cover civil-military cooperation, humanitarian assistance, and counter-terrorism operations, ensuring that both forces are equipped to respond effectively to evolving security challenges.

The India–Maldives military exercise holds significant geopolitical and security implications. The Indian Ocean region, a critical maritime space for trade and strategic security, faces challenges including piracy, smuggling, and non-traditional security threats. By strengthening defence collaboration with Maldives, India reinforces regional stability and maritime domain security.

Moreover, the exercise reflects India’s broader Indo-Pacific engagement strategy, positioning it as a reliable security partner for smaller island nations in the Indian Ocean. Regular joint exercises like ‘Ekuverin’ enhance mutual trust, build operational readiness, and signal a commitment to collective regional security.
The initiative also aligns with India’s Neighbourhood First policy, fostering close military, diplomatic, and socio-economic ties with Maldives. It demonstrates India’s capacity to support its maritime partners while deterring asymmetric threats in the strategically important Indian Ocean region.
The 14th edition of ‘Ekuverin’ strengthens India–Maldives bilateral defence ties, enhances interoperability, and contributes to a secure, stable, and cooperative Indian Ocean region. Such exercises are crucial for preparing armed forces to respond to contemporary security challenges while deepening regional partnerships.
