The 2026 board revamp increases competency questions, pushes analytical learning, brings twice-yearly Class 10 exams, and includes an early schedule for Class 10 and Class 12 assessments nationwide.

CBSE has introduced a major revamp of the Class 10 and Class 12 board examination pattern for 2026, shifting the focus from memorized responses to deeper conceptual understanding and analytical thinking.
The board said the updated format is intended to strengthen long-term learning by encouraging students to apply concepts in varied contexts.

The revised structure, aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, specifies that 50% of each question paper will now be competency-based.
These items may appear as multiple-choice questions, case studies, data interpretation exercises, source-based tasks, or real-world situations that require applying classroom concepts.
Another 20% has been set aside for MCQs, while the remaining 30% will be short and long descriptive answers.
According to the board, the redesigned pattern aims to assess a student’s ability to interpret and use information instead of recalling it.
Officials said the change is part of a broader effort to make assessments more reflective of real learning.
CBSE has also confirmed that Class 10 students will take two board exams a year beginning in 2026, a measure recommended by NEP 2020 to give learners greater flexibility and more chances to show academic progress.

The schedule for the 2026 examinations has been finalized as well. Both Class 10 and Class 12 exams will start on Feb 1.
Class 10 will begin with Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic, while Class 12 students will begin with Biotechnology, Entrepreneurship, and Shorthand in Hindi and English.
The Class 10 exams will end on March 10, and Class 12 papers will finish on April 9.
